Operational Safety Leadership
What is the scope:
You will establish and maintain effective Operational Safety programs for all autonomous vehicle (AV) fleet operations.
Job Summary:
You will be responsible for creating safety programs for autonomous vehicle (AV) fleet operations. The programs ensure that the infrastructure, operations, and processes used during AV rides and deliveries comply with regulatory safety requirements and align with the industry standards and best practices.
Who we are looking for:
- An Operational Safety Leader with extensive experience in the transportation sector (AV, aviation, automotive, trucking, maritime, etc.)
- Strong understanding of the core concepts of a safety management system and knowledge of relevant industry standards within AV technology that inform these activities.
- Direct experience establishing successful safety programs within a safety management system framework.
- Strong familiarity with safety concern reporting, incident response protocols, oversight programs for AV operations staff, safety performance metrics, business continuity planning, and safety assurance.
- Proven success working in deeply cross-functional environments. This role requires collaboration internally and externally with several partners and stakeholders.
- Stays abreast of safety and industry trends, is a member of professional safety associations and has a strong understanding of Automated Vehicle Safety Consortium (AVSC) and SAE safety standards.
What You will do:
- Operational Safety: Be the responsible leader for all safety programs, including overall safety culture, specific to autonomous vehicle fleet operations.
- Program Management: Manage safety programs from creation through operational implementation and beyond, ensuring adherence standards and requirements. Serve as the primary point of contact for cross-functional teams and external partners on operational safety.
- Partner Engagement: Work closely with partners and others to understand the requirements for operations on the platform with the goal of successfully implementing against those requirements for mutually beneficial outcomes.
- Cross-functional Leadership: Collaborate with several leaders, including legal, policy, finance, human resources, engineering, and regional operations teams.
Required qualifications:
- Operational Safety: Minimum 8 years experience implementing or supporting safety programs, preferably related to autonomous vehicle testing or operations.
- Program Management: Proven track record managing safety programs within a relevant industry, with experience leading cross-functional and cross-industry teams.
- Communication & Relationship Building: Exceptional communication and relationship management skills, with the ability to work across different cultures and industries.
- Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in safety, engineering, or related technical fields.
Preferred qualifications but not absolute:
- Advanced degree in safety, engineering, or related technical fields
- Experience working with safety management system (SMS) frameworks
- Experience performing data analysis of operational safety data to generate reports and take action on safety performance indicators
- Experience presenting on the safety-related programs and activities to high level leaders and stakeholders across multiple industries
- A continuous improvement approach, with a history of quick adaptation and self-directed learning
- A passion for creating empathetic, inspiring, and innovative transportation solutions in pursuit of positive societal outcomes
